Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS)

The State of Maine is requiring all community water systems and non-transient, non-community water systems to conduct monitoring for 6 PFAS contaminants before December 31, 2022. An interim standard of 20 parts per trillion (PPT) has been set by the State of Maine for these combined contaminants. The EPA will be filing a proposed rule on or before December 31, 2023, establishing a maximum contaminant level (MCL) for PFAS and monitoring requirements for community water systems and non-transient, non-community water systems.

On or before June 1, 2024, the EPA will file a final rule regarding the regulation of PFAS contaminants. The Gray Water District is pleased to announce that we have stayed ahead of this emerging contaminant and began our own testing in March 2020. We have tested our water every year since and have produced results well below the 20 PPT interim standard set by the state.

The Maine Drinking Water Program has announced new funding sources to help address PFAS contamination issues. There is a grant offered to Public Water Systems for the purpose of paying for the extension of water mains to homes that have private well contamination. If you have PFAS contamination in your private well we may be able to help. Please contact the office at 207-657-3500.
